Desiree Ferrin is the Birth Trauma Patient Advocate for the Utah Women and Newborns Quality Collaborative (UWNQC). In 2019 she survived an undiagnosed placenta accreta, which resulted in maternal code, an emergency hysterectomy, an ICU stay, as well as multiple blood transfusions. This was life changing. She struggled to make sense of the trauma she had experienced. She sought help and since then has advocated for other mothers who have experienced trauma and mental health challenges. In addition to her work with UWNQC, she sits on the Utah Maternal Mortality Review Committee, as well as the Intermountain Patient Advisory Council. She is a certified Patient Family Partner for Momma's Voices (a maternal mortality and morbidity advocate organization) as well as a member of Mom Congress, another organization that advocates for legislation that will decrease the maternal mortality rates in the United States. She has shared her story and perspective locally and nationally, consulted on the AIM obstetric emergency readiness resource kit, and is currently one of the faces of the CDC HearHER campaign.
